Macro Photography Guide
Base Camera Settings
Aperture: f/5.6–f/11 (balance sharpness & background blur)
ISO: 100–800 (raise only if light is low or when using fast shutter)
Shutter Speed:
Handheld: ≥1/200 sec (or sync with flash)
Tripod: As low as needed—use timer or remote
Mode: Manual or Aperture Priority recommended
Stabilization: Off when tripod-mounted
Focusing Techniques
Manual Focus: Preferred for precision (especially static subjects)
Rocking Technique: Gently sway in and out of focus while firing bursts
Focus Rails: For ultra-fine adjustments on tripod
Auto Focus (if used): Use single-point AF near the eye or detail
Focus Stacking: Multiple exposures at different focus points, merged in post
Composition Tips
Isolate the subject: Keep backgrounds clean and distant
Use diagonals: Dynamic framing for insects or flowers
Include negative space: Adds breathing room and drama
Symmetry or patterns: Excellent for flowers, textures, or abstract forms
Fill the frame but don’t clip key parts
Approaching Live Subjects
Early morning or cool temps: Insects are slower = easier to shoot
Move slowly & low: Approach from behind or side, not head-on
Pre-focus: Estimate subject distance, wait for alignment
Eye-level shots: More intimate and engaging compositions
Patience > speed: Let the scene come to you
Common Pitfalls & Fixes
Motion Blur: Use faster shutter or flash; brace elbows or use tripod
Too Shallow DOF: Don’t shoot wide open unless for abstract effect
Missed Focus on Eyes: Manually fine-tune or switch AF point
Busy Backgrounds: Reposition or use wider aperture
Subject Movement: Anticipate, pre-focus, and fire in short bursts
Flash & Diffuser Tips
When to Use Flash:
Freeze motion (wind or insects)
Fill in harsh shadows
Add catchlight or detail
Diffuse It Well:
DIY softboxes, foam diffusers, or commercial domes
Avoid harsh point light — bounce when possible
Balance Ambient & Flash:
Use TTL or Manual Flash (1/16–1/4 power range)
Keep shutter near sync speed (1/200–1/250)
